If I Could Start Over… These Are the Lessons I’d Learn Sooner

11 the Lessons I’d Learn Sooner

What if you could go back and skip the hard lessons?

Not avoid them entirely but learn them faster, cheaper, and with less pain.

That’s exactly what this is about.

Because while the journey isn’t always pretty, the lessons you earn along the way? Those are priceless. And if you can borrow them from someone who’s already paid the price, you’re ahead of the game.

So here are the biggest things I’ve learned (and wish I’d done sooner).

1. Learn to Actually Listen

Most people hear but they don’t listen.

And that’s a problem.

If you want to grow in business and life, you need to listen to:

  • Your team
  • Your clients
  • Your prospects
  • Your mentors
  • Your family

They’re constantly giving you clues.

But here’s the key: don’t blindly follow everything. Take it in, filter it, and then align it with your own instincts and values.

At the end of the day, your best decisions come from a combination of input and intuition.

2. Make Time to Think (Most People Don’t)

We’re all busy but very few people are actually thinking.

Thinking is where clarity happens:

  • Goals get defined
  • Problems get solved
  • Direction becomes obvious

Whether it’s during a drive, a workout, or quiet time, create space to think.

And don’t just think passively. Be intentional:

  • What are your goals?
  • What’s your plan?
  • What needs to happen next?

If you don’t think, you drift. And drifting doesn’t build anything meaningful.

3. Write Down Your Goals (Yes, Seriously)

Thinking is step one. Writing it down is step two.

Because vague goals lead to vague results.

Get specific:

  • What do you want?
  • When do you want it?
  • How are you going to get there?

And most importantly…

Who is going to help you get there?

You don’t have to do everything yourself. In fact, you shouldn’t.

4. Stop Doing Everything Yourself

There’s a powerful concept: “Who Not How.”

Instead of asking:

“How do I do this?”

Ask:

“Who can do this better than me?”

Delegation isn’t laziness – it’s leverage.

You free yourself up to focus on what actually moves the needle.

And no, it won’t always be done exactly how you would do it.

That’s okay.

Done is better than perfect and progress beats control every time.

5. Take Action But Make It Smarter

Taking action is critical.

But reckless action? That leads to mistakes.

The goal is deliberate action:

  • Think first
  • Plan second
  • Move with intention

You don’t want to fall into “analysis paralysis,” but you also don’t want to bulldoze your way into bad decisions.

Balance is everything.

6. Push Through Fear (That’s What Bravery Really Is)

Bravery isn’t the absence of fear.

It’s moving forward despite fear.

Every big decision comes with uncertainty:

  • New opportunities
  • Bigger risks
  • Higher stakes

But if you wait until you feel “ready,” you’ll never move.

Progress belongs to the people who move anyway.

7. Keep Moving (No Matter What)

You don’t need perfect conditions, you need momentum.

Whether you think of it like:

  • A hedgehog pushing forward
  • Or even a race where only the persistent win

The principle is the same:

Keep going.

If you stop, you stall.
If you stall, you fall behind.

8. Learn to Adjust (Without Losing the Goal)

Plans change. That’s normal.

What shouldn’t change? The destination.

You might:

  • Take a different route
  • Try a new approach
  • Pivot when something doesn’t work

But you keep moving toward the same objective.

Being flexible is a strength and not a weakness.

9. Your Goals Will Change and That’s Okay

What mattered 10 years ago might not matter today.

And that’s not failure, that’s growth.

Your priorities evolve:

  • Family
  • Lifestyle
  • Business direction

So don’t stay stuck chasing an outdated version of success.

Update your goals to match who you are now.

10. Gratitude Changes Everything

Here’s something simple but powerful:

If you focus on something good for just 20 seconds, it can shift your mindset.

Gratitude rewires how you see the world.

Instead of constantly noticing what’s wrong…
You start seeing what’s right.

Try this daily:

  • Ask yourself: “What’s one good thing that happened today?”
  • Sit with it. Reflect on it.

Over time, your brain starts looking for more of it.

11. Prayer, Faith, or Reflection – Find Your Anchor

Whether it’s prayer, meditation, or quiet reflection, having a grounding practice matters.

It helps you:

  • Stay centered
  • Reduce stress
  • Gain perspective

And in a world full of noise, that clarity is powerful.

Final Thoughts: Progress Over Perfection

Nobody gets this right all the time.

Not even close.

But if you:

  • Listen better
  • Think deeper
  • Act with intention
  • Adjust when needed
  • Stay grateful

You’ll be miles ahead of where you started.

And that’s the goal.
